Anthropic Sets Aside 5% of Its Shares for a Public Benefit Fund

The company is creating its own fund to back projects that help society. How it will be run, and by whom, is still unknown.

Anthropic has announced a public benefit fund. The company will commit 5% of its shares to it and may add another 2% for every 50% increase in its own value. Anthropic says this gives it more flexibility and scale for projects that help society.

How it will work

The fund will be a wholly owned entity inside Anthropic. So far the company only gives broad examples: large donations to traditional nonprofits and direct payments to specific groups of people. The job market is mentioned separately. Anthropic has already put $200 million into studying how AI affects employment, and it says that given the pace of progress, "bolder approaches may be needed."

What is still missing

There is no dollar figure, no timeline and no named leadership. It is also unclear who will decide which projects get money, or how the growth in value that triggers the extra 2% will be measured. Anthropic promises to share details on structure and governance in the coming months.

Why it matters

The announcement comes while public sentiment toward the AI industry is turning sour. CEO Dario Amodei has called this a crisis of trust. The fund looks like an attempt to answer it with action, but it can only be judged once the rules for spending the money are public.
