# BioLite promises up to 60 hours of fridge backup, depending on the load

Briefly: WIRED tested the Backup by BioLite system for the refrigerator. One battery with a capacity of 1526 Wh costs $1,999; a set of two units for $3,499 gives about 3072 Wh. The manufacturer says that with the right refrigerator, the two-unit system can maintain power for up to 60 hours. The reviewer disconnected the network line and confirmed a quick switch to the battery. This is a useful feature in the event of an accident, especially when it is important to preserve food. However, the installation turned out to be more difficult than expected, the application does not keep a detailed log of energy consumption, and the batteries take up space behind the refrigerator.

Why “two and a half days without electricity” cannot be promised to everyone: the period depends on the energy consumption of a particular model, the temperature in the room, the frequency of opening the door and the number of batteries. The words "up to 60 hours" describe the top scenario, not the outcome of any home. The observer himself considered the daily forecast shown by the application to be too optimistic for his case. His savings on night and day rates were only about a dollar a month in the fall. Therefore, an expensive device cannot be justified by the promise of a quick payback on tariffs. The real point of buying is in an emergency reserve. Before choosing, you should measure the consumption of the refrigerator, check the installation location and compare the price with other ways to save power during a power outage.
