Gemini voice navigation reaches Google Maps on CarPlay

US drivers can ask Google Maps follow-up questions through Gemini; the global rollout has begun without a country-by-country timetable.

Google has added a conversational Gemini interface to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay. The feature is available in the United States today, while Google says a wider rollout is under way. A driver can tap the Gemini icon on the car display, ask for a place to stop, refine the request and then request a route that avoids toll roads. The change makes a sequence of related navigation questions possible by voice instead of requiring the driver to type while traveling.

The boundary matters. The CarPlay announcement does not say Gemini can draw on a driver's Gmail, Calendar, Photos or other personal Google data. Those Personal Intelligence features were announced for Android Auto and cars with Google built in, but their availability on CarPlay remains unconfirmed. Google has not provided a precise list of countries or dates for the international launch either. Claims that the assistant can already read anyone's email in every CarPlay vehicle go beyond the announcement. The immediate benefit is narrower and practical: people using Google Maps in a compatible car can ask more flexible spoken questions about stops and directions. Search results and suggested routes still deserve a quick check when it is safe to look at the screen.
