A Bug Made Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Record Conversations Without Being Asked

Some users found their glasses saving audio and transcripts without the "Hey Meta" phrase. Meta says the bug is fixed.

This week several owners of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses reported that the devices were recording conversations when nobody had activated the assistant. Meta says the cause was a bug and that it has been fixed.

What users saw

A Reddit user said it happened across three pairs of Meta Ray-Bans, even though the "Respond without Hey Meta" setting was turned off. The Meta AI app kept audio recordings and text transcripts of these conversations in the history. The user asked for a serious technical investigation and wrote that customers should not have to wonder whether private talks are being captured.

Why it matters

The glasses sit on a face and listen in public places, so the people nearby never agreed to anything. A wake phrase is the only barrier between ordinary speech and a stored recording, and here that barrier failed.

What to do now

Update the glasses and the companion app, then open the conversation history in the Meta AI app and delete anything you did not request. The bug is closed, but it is not clear how long it lasted or how many recordings were stored, and that is where the privacy worries remain.
