Spotify rolls out paid podcast memberships in 34 regions

Podcast creators can sell tiers with bonus episodes, early access and fewer ads directly through Spotify.

A new revenue route

Spotify is rolling out Memberships in 34 regions. Podcasters can set prices and bundle benefits such as extra episodes, early access and reduced advertising. Spotify says creators keep 90% of membership revenue. Listeners subscribe from a show's page, while creators gain tools for trials and targeted promotions. This offers a more direct relationship with regular listeners than advertising alone.

The practical limits

A show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone and meet minimum thresholds: three episodes, 100 listeners or viewers and 100 hours of consumption. Memberships is separate from Spotify's older paid-podcast feature and can sit alongside ads. The unresolved question is how many listeners will pay for individual shows when subscriptions already compete for their budgets. For a small creator, paying members will matter more than the number of regions in the launch.
