What was claimed
Replit CEO Amjad Masad told TechCrunch Disrupt that the future of work belongs to "self-driving companies". The idea is that AI agents take over routine tasks while people keep judgment and taste. He says Replit already runs this way, that agents do not take jobs, and that the work becomes more interesting and people happier.
What is actually behind it
The only concrete example is customer support. An agent reviews the ticket against GitHub issues, the codebase and Linear, a person gets the case with context already attached, and a fix ships with one click. That is good automation, but it is one workflow, not a company that drives itself. A human still sits in the middle and presses the button, as Masad himself says.
Everything else is impression rather than measurement. The talk gives no headcount, productivity change, revenue or timeline. The claim that agents took nobody's job is Masad's own reading, and it comes from a company that sells exactly these tools. The line about happier, more creative people is not measured either. The piece contains no outside research and no dissenting voice.
The takeaway
A sensible idea of automating routine, wrapped in a loud slogan. A company that runs without people has not been shown on a single data point.
