Mercedes-AMG GT SUV as a "1,150hp Electric Beast": A Paper Number for a 2028 Model

The Verge leads with 1,150 horsepower for the new AMG electric SUV, but the figure matches an earlier sedan and comes from the maker, not from a test.

What was claimed

The Verge headlined its piece "Mercedes-AMG's first ground-up SUV is a 1,150hp electric beast". The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is described as equally powerful as the GT four-door coupe and as an ultra-fast-charging electric people-hauler.

What is actually there

The horsepower figure is not new. The same text says the GT four-door coupe already offered over 1,150 horsepower from three axial flux motors, and the SUV is called "equally powerful". So the headline number is the powertrain carried over to a bigger body, announced by the manufacturer. Nothing in the excerpt we have reports an independent test, a measured acceleration time or a real-world range.

The genuinely new fact is a different one: this is the first time in AMG's 59-year history that it has developed a full-size SUV entirely in house, on its AMG.EA architecture. It is due in the US next summer, and it is a 2028 model, so buyers are being asked to judge it on promises.

Why the framing overreaches

Peak horsepower is the easiest number to print and the hardest to feel. How long a car can hold it, how heavy the SUV is and how it behaves on a long drive matter more for owners than a number on a slide. "Beast" is a label, not a measurement. The car may well be quick, but today we have a spec sheet, not a verdict.
